Captain H.B. Milks Pilots Knob

I'm researching a set of Civil War documents. The later 1864 - 1865 papers focus on the 23rd Regiment Veterans Reserve Corps at Schofield Barracks, St. Louis. Captain H.B. Milks has signed a couple of the docs as "H.B. Milks, Major, Cav, AA Insp Genl for Dist of Mo." I've read of his exploits in the Missouri Cavalry. I'm wanting to know how or why he went from the Cavalry to the Missouri A.G. or the 23rd Regiment Veterans Reserve Corps. Most of the Veterans Reserve Corps were wounded/disabled troops from various manuever units. Any information on H.B. Milks, Henry B. Milks, (one source names a Hiram Milks?) would be sincerely appreciated! Burton in Boise, Idaho.
