In 1862, when Margaret Hays wrote of Richard Samuel "Sam" Kimberlin Sr.'s death, his oldest son, either Henry or Isaiah, was with the army (CSA), the others may have been with the Gurerillas as they lived near Blue Spring, MO where the band that Quantrill joined was formed. At some time Isaiah was joined by William Grant and Richard Samuel, Jr. and maybe Robert Kemper Kimberlin in Co. D, 2nd/12th Missouri Cavalry, CSA under Col. Upton Hays. Many of Hays' men served with Quantrill. Hays had led the Missouri Partisan Rangers until he raised a regiment (The Jackson Co. Batillion) for the CSA and turned the Rangers over to Quantrill in early 1862. Hays would return to Jackson Co. from Arkansas with some of his men, recruiting and cooperating with the guerrillas who provided protection for his recruiting activities. The older brothers served in Co. D until the end of the war and were paroled. By then the 12 th MO Cav was led by Col. David Shanks.

A younger brother, Julian stayed in Jackson Co. and he and I think one of his sisters served with Quantrill but were not engaged in combat as far as I know.

To find mention of the Kimberlins at the Watts Hays Letters go to the Names Index.
