Missouri Confederate Congressmen and Senators

Need to pick the brains of authorities on the Confederate Congress. Does anybody know how Confederate Congressmen and Senators were selected? Since U.S. Senators back then were appointed by state legislatures, I assume the Missouri Confederate Senators were probably appointed by Governor Reynolds or the legislature in exile--but what about the Congressmen? Obviously they didn't stand for election in their home districts. And what home districts?--Missouri was entitled to thirteen representatives in the Confederate Congress, which is several more than it was entitled to in the U.S. Congress. I have one 1864 source that says the Missouri Confederate Congressmen were "self-elected," but there is no explanation as to what that means.
