I wonder if he was related to Peter Louis UTZ, b. 1831 Va d. 1915 CA. He was employed by Col. Upton Hays before the Civil War and stayed with Upton's wife, Margaret until she was exiled from Jackson Co., MO in 1863. After the CS he followed Margaret Hays to Californis and later married Agnes McMurtry, a niece of Col. Hays who he knew in MO. I did not find any record of CW service.
