Re: Sugar Creek battle - Nodaway County Confederat

Elizabeth,
I couldn't find a service record for Robert Rankin.

I suspect that "Sugar Creek" is the Battle of Pea Ridge (aka Elkhorn Tavern) in northwest Arkansas -- March 7-8, 1862. The Union entrenchments were on the north side of Sugar Creek facing south. The Confederates and MSG crossed Sugar Creek west of their entrenchments and, by forced march overnight, attacked them from the west and north. The MSG marched the furthest and attacked south down the Telegraph Road to Elkhorn Tavern in the morning.

I also have ancestors from Holt County, Nodaway Twshp, who later moved to the Cherokee Nation, Indian Territory.

Ken
