Bruce, Lou Wehmer or Carl Burkhead are the experts on Devil Dick Boze. I can tell you that the Dick Bowles killed by the 7th Kansas in Oregon County was Devil Dick Boze. I can also tell you that the reason they were able to catch up with him was the fact that he and others had just stolen some horses from a couple of gentlemen at Lesterville in Reynolds County. There was a rather large family living in Texas County named Shipp. Mid 60's they pretty much got run out of the area for being union supporters. Two of them went to Illinois and one joined the 144th Illinois Infantry and another the 117th. A third brother stayed in Missouri and joined the 6th MO Cav. Robert Shipp appears to have moved to the area between Lesterville and Pilot Knob. Boze and some others robbed Shipp and stole a horse from him and one from a neighbor named Adkins. It appears from the records that Shipp knew the Oregon County area well and he and Adkins guided the 7th Kansas patrol to the place where Boze was staying. There is considerable circumstantial evidence that Boze and Alex Chilton of Carter County were working together a portion of the time. It would not surprise me at all if Boze were Bowles and raiding that far east.

I have not been able to prove that all the references to Dick Bowles apply to Dick Boze, but, some do.....
