Dick Boze had a gang in Oregon County with the core composed of his brothers in law, the Huddleston boys. They seem to have stayed in the Oregon, Ripley Shannon, and Carter area until the Spring of 1864 when the MSM patrols from Pilot Knob came out prepared to break them up. In post war testamony in a civil case, concerning wartime horse stealing, John G. Huddleston said they had to "leave the state". The next credible report is in the Peterson papers, a 3rd MSM cav. Sgt. said his party was attacked at, I don't have the report handy but I believe Centerville, in Sept., 1864 by about 40 rebel scouts led by Capt Dick Boze. According to local legend, a patrol of "mill burners" burned the mill of Dick and Tom Boze and killed Tom for objecting. Dick became "Devil Dick" at that time with his first recorded action against the Feds being against a patrol from the 1st Indiana Cav., 8 miles east of Thomasville in June of 1862. Yeah, I know that was supposed to be against Coleman's men but the action was at Margaret Huddleston's house, Devil Dick's mother-in-law. We know of at least three actions at her house and the boys would escape over Yellow Bluff east of the house after a firefight. This was where the patrol from the 7th Ks. Cav caught and killed him in June of 1865. He has been refered to as Boze, Bows, Boes, Beaux, and Bowles but Dick Boze and Dick Bowles were two different men. I can't prove that but From what we have about Dick Boze he was operating in Oregon County while Dick Bowles was operating several counties to the east.
