Re: Burning of Barnesville, Reynolds Co.

Fall of 1862, Reynolds County

I believe these two cards to be “flawed”. I think some errors were made when the cards were transcribed from the original company records. However, I think some assumptions can rather safely be made in regards to the dates.

Statement of Joseph McGlothlin

Centerville Missouri
May 15th 1864

Mr. Joseph McGlothlin of lawful age being duly sworn says I know Thomas F Bounds a citizen of Reynolds County, Mo. On or about the first day of October 1862 twelve or thirteen men came to my house. They said they were from St. Louis and were going south. They demanded something to eat. I told them to leave, that it would not do for them to remain there. Mr. Bounds, who was working for me told them to follow him and he would show them a hiding place. They went with him into the brush about a hundred yards from my house. He then returned and carried food to them as fast as my family could prepare it. After they had finished eating they inquired if they could get to the road leading to Logan’s Creek in Reynolds Co. Mo. Mr. Bounds answered them by proffering his services as guide and accompanied them when they left. I afterward learned that these men were rebels and were overtaken and dispersed by the federals at the house of John Counts on Logan’s Creek.
