In the meantime, I would point out that this name --Marquis DeSmith-- is one of those names that shows up spelled a variety of ways in different reports. I've seen it spelled Marcus DeSmith, Marquis D. Smith, Marcus D. Smith. So in looking through files for additional details of the Cow Island killings, researchers might keep that in mind, as well as the fact that he might also be reported simply as Lieutenant Smith.
