The Missouri in the Civil War Message Board

Re: 6th or "Southwest" MO Cav. CSA

There is always confusion involving the early creation of Missouri Confederate units. There Missouri State militia was not a rebel organization but a federally paid Union organization for 12,000 men for the sole purpose of serving in Missouri. There are names on the rosters of men who had served in the Missouri State guard ( a not quite rebel organization) in the case of the 6th Mo (C0 there were a number of men in it who had served with the 11th Mo. State Guard Cavalry which was raised primarily in SW Missouri and ultimately ceased to exist and the men became part of 3rd Mo. Cavalry (later the 6th, Coffee's regiment etc. It is not an easy organization to sort out. The regiment had problems from its very inception. By late 63 the regiment was reorganized as the 11th Mo. Cavalry (C).
