I am not sure who led the men from Vernon County to join Quantrill on the trip to Lawrence. I believe it is likely that William Gabbert made the trip to Lawrence. There was an ambush in May 1863 by the Cedar Co Militia at his farm killing 7 of his men and his house was burned. In April 1863 his son John Gabbert had been killed. William Gabbert died and was buried in October 1863 in Arkansas. If he was on the Lawrence Raid then he was moving south towards Texas.
