Actually, "my" James H Brookshire is listed in the MO records as "Bookshire." I haven't figured out who the James L Brookshire is, but suspect it might be an erroneous listing.
According to his letters, on 21 Aug 1963 he and "Wallos" [apparently Wallace Drenan] were in charge of the commissary, James apparently missed the "conflict with Coffee" due to being in the hospital.
In a letter dated 24 Sept 1863 he says "we have just got word to leave hear we are going to newosho and do not start till you git word from me a gain we leave hear write off and I cant write no more now we have to start".
His last letter is as follows: "Neosho Mo October 8th 1863
My Dear wife

It is with great regret I inform you of my present situation last Sunday afternoon our force at this post was attacked by a bout 1500 rebels we only had a small force and of corse was soon overpowered I was very sick at the time with flux the young man that was delasted (?) to attend to me was killed after he surrendered it was Turner who married my cusin I am very low at present and it may be that I will not get well I have now been bad with the flux 12 days

If it is posable for you to come with a wagon and a bead in it to take me home I would be much better satisfied my Regiment or that part of them that was here are all prisnors and I am here among strangers sick without any money bring some money with you to pay our expenses and also some cloths for me as all my cloths was taken by the rebels
