In an order dated July 6, 1864 in North East Arkansas General Shelby orders a Lt. M. L. Erwin comd'g Co. E, Hunter's Battn to deliver 'the man named Shirley (apparently a negro)' to Jacksonport Jail. First thought in my head was that Shelby was using Hunter as a Provo unit. However, I am not looking in the right places and lack McGhees book at the moment and can't seem to find anything of Lt. M. L. Erwin. Help is needed.
