2nd MO Cav. KIA at Leakesville, MS?

I'm Jim Huffman, Adj., Gainesville Vols, SCV Camp 373, Pearl River County, MS.

We're trying to determine who the CS soldier was who was taken prisoner and died shortly thereafter following the Dec. 10, 1864, battle at Leakesville, MS, or near the Chickasawha River near Leakesville.

There aremarkers for an unknown CS soldier and an unknown US soldier in the woods several miles from the battle.

Some of our local amateur historians believe the graves to be the graves of the US Lt. from the 2nd NY Veteran Cavalry who was mortally wounded at the battle, as well as the grave of the CS soldier who was captured (almost certainly mortally wounded, too) and who died and was buried with the US Lt., possibly in the same grave.

We think the CS vet has a good chance of being from either the 2nd MO Cavalry or Willis' TX Cavalry (Waul's TX Legion).

If anyone on the board knows the identity of the CS KIA or has a contact who is researching either the 2nd MO Cavalry or Willis' TX Cavalry (Waul's TX Cavalry), we would appreciate your posting that information here or contacting me personally at huffman1234@bellsouth.net.

Our goal is to get VA headstones for both the US and CS vet, properly mark their graves, and conduct an appropriate memorial service for these forgotten warriors.

Thanks for your time! -- Jim Huffman, Adj., Gainesville Vols
