Re: More slaveowning Unionists
This is a great discussion with wonderful supporting evidence that there were numerous slaveholders in the Union Army. I might add Ulysses S. Grant to the list. Technically, the slaves under his authority belonged to his wife's family estate, but the point is the same: he had slaves and kept his slaves until 1865. Ironically, Robert E. Lee freed the slaves under his authority in 1861. I think this is another indication that the color of the uniform did not automatically reflect one's view on slavery or the reality of their personal connection to slavery. Allen
