I'm probably a novice at this, but I found an interesting book, available as a Google Books download. Theodore D. Strickler, "When and Where We Met Each Other." It lists "Battles, Engagements, Actions, Skirmishes, and Expeditions during the Civil War, 1861-1866." This book, copyright, 1899, lists these alphabetically by state and it has been very useful to me.
