Who were the MidKnight Rangers early in 1865 in northwest Missouri? I have transcribed letter published in Atchison Globe in Feb 1865 warning all PawPaw militia in Buchanan and Platte counties to leave the state before 1 March 1865 or face hell, death and damnation. About 20 of the Paw Paws are mentioned by name including two or three of my Pace family relatives. I googled and found some stuff of post civil war reconstruction KKK calling themselves Midnight Rangers? Were they active even while the war was going on and why would they be threatening their own southern sympathizers, ie the Paw Paw Militia who rode with Thrailkill, Thornton, and Quantrill?
