The Missouri in the Civil War Message Board

Amanda Bowen-Hannibal,MO

We came to own a small personal writing album with several entries by various men, all dated 1861-1863. The subject matter is mostly poetic letters and ramblings of thought which seem to be very detailed yet random. Several of the letters contain sentences that are stressing matters not totally related to the original topic.
The interesting part is that there are small letter-like boxes in the center of the book that have 2-3 ladies names and dates. One name is Amanda Bowen, Hannibal, MO. Feb. 9,1962. I have learned she was a highly skilled mail runner for the Confederate cause, the sister of Sam Bowen and Bart Bowen. She was known by Samuel Clemens as well, and was spoke of in his writings to others.
Basically the letters written in this small book appear to be coded messages Ms.Bowen was passing to her superiors between Hannibal and Southern Mississippi.
If anyone would like to know the other names, dates and can help me figure out the cypher used in the letters I would be willing to share the information with you.
Thank you,
