Re: Pitcher's Mill, Jackson Co., Mo.

I came across an interesting Diary entry from the diaries of Willard Hall Mendenhall, transcribed by Maragret Mendenhall Frazier. He resided in Callaway country and was very much a southern sympathizer. His diary entry for June 30, 1862 sheds some light on events in Jackson County.

June 30, 1862: ' Miss Nancy Pitcher tells us of horrible deeds committed by Col. Jennison's regiment in Jackson county. Several of her relations have had their homes burned by them, their negroes, horses and everything they possessed take from them. they have taken the lives of boys ten years old. They went in the house of David Porter, his daughter was sick in bed. They stripped the clothes off the bed, stole what they wanted and set fire to the house.'

Apparently Miss Pitcher was sent to family in Callaway county.
