I really don't think Colonel Jeans was a bushwhacker.

I see Bruce Allardice agrees with me in his short biography of Jeans in his 2008 "Confederate Colonels: A Biographical Register" published by University of Missouri Press on page 213. Allardice wrote that Jeans resigned from LTC Hay's "Jackson County Regiment" "due to wounds, late in 1863." This account also says Jeans was "WIA while recruiting behind Union lines in Jackson Co., March 20, 1864."

You are probably referring to mentions of Jeans in Jackson County by the Union military in March 1864. Specifically, "O.R." series 1, vol. 34, part 1, page 650-651 said Jeans had been recruiting in Jackson County over the winter of 1863-1864. Late in March 1864 Major Mullins's patrol of 47 troopers of the 1st Cavalry MSM somewhere in Jackson County broke up a camp of southern recruits, wounding Jeans, who managed to escape. At least the patrol assumed that was Jeans in Confederate uniform who escaped wounded, since they captured a horse that had some kind of case with Jeans' name in it at the site. This is also cited in Broadfoot's "Supplement to the 'O.R.,' Part 2, Records of Events, vol. 34, in a mention by Company I, 1st Cavalry MSM, on page 490.

The Union military always had a poor idea of the command structure of the west-central MO guerrillas, and when they found a name they tended to make wild claims about that leader's role with the guerrillas. I maintain that Jeans was simply recruiting in the Jackson County area, his pre-war home, and the guerrillas present in March 1864 provided him with security. None of the guerrilla memoirs mention Jeans as a guerrilla or guerrilla leader, and they surely would have if he was one of them, since he was well known as a regular Confederate officer from their home region.
