Jim,
William Fannin in the July 1982 edition of "Pioneer Times" entitled "Defenders of the Border: Missouri's Union Military Organizations in the Civil War," said on page 188:

"Home Guard--State Militia--Missouri Volunteers: only three of over a dozen types of military service performed by the 109,000-odd Missourians who served the Union during the Civil War."

The problem with that kind of counting is that many of the same Union soldiers served in more than one type of unit--that is, a man would serve in the home guard in 1861, then pull a three-year hitch in a volunteer unit, and when his term is over then serve in one of the Missouri Militia (MM) outfits near home. Or, he could serve in the 1861 home guard until the Federals suspended them the first winter of the war, the Enrolled Missouri Militia (EMM) in 1862 into early 1863, then in spring 1863 be detached out of his EMM unit to serve in the Provisional EMM (PEMM) until the General Assembly shuts them down in autumn 1863...well, you get the picture.

So, you can see that many Union men were counted more than once to reach the 109,000. If they had 2,000 men in each regiment, you could see that 109,000 men in total works out to about 60 regiments of one kind or another, which depending on how you count them, that could actually fit the actual situation of all the different kinds of Union units in Missouri.

Jim, if you haven't heard, I am giving a lecture at the MO Sec'y of State Building auditorium at 7pm Thursday evening 15 August 2013 in Jefferson City concerning the guerrillas at the center of Missouri in the Jefferson City region. It's part of their monthly history lecture program, and it's free. You would be very welcome, and I wouldn't embarrass you, since a number of my in-laws will be there. That part of the family was Confederate.

Until later, Bruce
