River Run Red by Andrew Ward on Ft. Pillow refers to Black Bob McCulloch's 2nd Missouri Cavalry as the "Missouri Mongols".

I haven't been able to find any other references to that nickname. Does anyone know of any or have any info on the origin? It would seem logical that it may have been acquired after the unit began operating outside of Missouri.
