Jim is correct. I wrote a bio article on Gantt for my "More Generals in Gray" (LSU Press, 1995). Gantt was an Arkansan through and through, and never had MSG rank. Gantt was a Confederate Colonel, and "acting" Brigadier General at New Madrid, where he commanded a brigade for a time.
