Bowen has another article published around the same time that you might also want to check out... it's about what he called the "Relative Deprivation Hypothesis"... AKA why so many guerrillas enlisted at such young ages in Western Missouri. According to Bowen it was the second and third sons of mildly affluent to affluent planters who were at the greatest risk of losing their inheritances (land/slaves/future crop yield) if the old system fell and wage labor became predominant so they were the most eager to join up with the likes of Quantrill, Jackson, Holtzclaw, Anderson, etc.

Mark Geiger expands on this idea in his book about financial fraud and guerrilla violence, but doesn't carry his story about home foreclosures to its logical conclusion (situations where the local community would be the only people at the bank auction and simply allow the foreclosed farmer to buy back his own property at extremely cheap prices through collusion).
