I agree with your statement. There were a number of statements in the last chapter of that book that were pretty much diametrically opposed to the facts, and the take on Price moving against Columbia was one of them.

In his orders regarding the formation of the Columbia Tigers militia, General Fisk dealt with the potential for the town to be confronted by an overwhelming force, and in other orders he expressed similar concerns about significant detachments of Price's army crossing the river. Glascow, on the north side of the river, was taken by a detachment of Price's army. Does anyone know how that force crossed the river? My Dad grew up near Dundee (half way between Washington and New Haven), and he told stories of being able to wade the river in some summers. Bruce Nichols indicated there was low flow in the summer of 1864. This last summer (or was it 2012?), 90% of flow in the Missouri was comprised of releases from the upstream reservoirs. Imagine a river not constrained by wing dikes that scour the channel, and one can imagine being able to ride/swim a horse across the river if one could find a firm bottom for entry/egress.
