A MO UDC application by his niece says he died in Denver in 1870.
I wasn't satisfied by just this, but it seems to fit with the one newspaper mention, and the fact that he doesn't seem to be mentioned from 1872 on.
As to laramie newspapers, find the UPenn guide to historical online newspapers and scroll down to Wyoming.
