Re: 4th Missouri Cav. (US) Flag captured at Egypt

Ron:

In searching through Google for information on the skirmish at Egypt Station on Dec. 28, 1864
your message of 4-28-14 came up. I just purchased a letter of Edward M. Riley, Co. A, 39th Miss.
Inf./ Co. A, 1st Regt. Confederate Veterans dated Jan. 3, 1865. He is very vivid in describing the
action at Egypt's Station, and commenting on the 39th's losses at Franklin (only 16 men remained
in the regt.!). I'm just beginning my research on E. M. Riley, but in the letter he states: "I have had
to report 23 desertions in the company [A, 39th Miss, Inf.] since then." - from 85 men when they
left Corinth. This suggests that he had some military responsibility - perhaps a sgt. or junior lieut.
Any information you can provide will be quite helpful.

Many thanks,

Wiley Sword
