Re: Francis M Skaggs/Scaggs, Co. H 12th MSM Cavalr

Thank you so much. You've answered the question I had regarding his death, and why he was buried at Jefferson Barracks. He was my 2nd great grand uncle.
For any of you historians who are interested in Sgt. James C Steakley (my 2nd great grandfather), I have recently discovered evidence in court records that his mother Elizabeth was arrested and charged with the murder of her infant daughter Arrina in Van Buren Co. Tennessee in Dec of 1843. She escaped from jail on or around 1 Jan 1844 and was never apprehended. I find the family John Steakey (Steakley), Elizabeth, James C and Mary E on the 1850 census for Dist. 14, Cape Girardeau Co. Mo (the part of Cape County that became Bollinger County in 1851). They weren't even hiding. I expected to find them possibly under an alias. FWIW, the attorney general filed to drop prosecution of the case in 1860.
Thanks again.
Pamela
