My reference to Francis in the book was just to include him in a list of all the Skaggs/Scaggs that served the Union during the war. They're listed in a footnote relating to Hildebrand's acknowledged execution of one of the Skaggs clan (first name unknown). You can find the Skaggs pages by referencing the index. Same with Steakley.
Regarding Steakley, he did have a wart or two, but he was certainly somebody you wanted on your side in a fight. Hildebrand's reference regarding how Steakley came at him comes across as being somewhat begrudged respect. Very unusual for Hildebrand.
