I found an official letter regarding the capture of Thomas Raney along with 11 other Porter men:

A. J. Crigler Age 27-Resident of Monroe-farmer-surrendered 23rd Oct.-Left home about 1st Aug.-never regularly joined into rebel service but attached to Price's Co.. Was with Porter when he took the ----? by New Ark Kirksville etc.
J. R. Crigler Same statements as above-age 17. Resident of Monroe & surrendered this day.
Jno. Hanna Age 21-Monroe Co.-Surrendered this day-Member Capt. White's (Rebel) Company.
W. J. Bell Member of Capt. White's Rebel Band-Surrendered this afernoon.
T. C. Raney Member of Capt. White's Rebel Band-Surrendered this afernoon.
Henry Welch Member of Capt. White's Rebel Band-Surrendered this afernoon.
S. M. Utterback Member of Capt. White's Rebel Band-Surrendered this afernoon.

J. R. Buckman Age 48-farmer-Monroe-arrested 11th inst.-chgd. with keeping rebel camp-says that he has kept for the last month 4 or 5 horses on his place, hid in the brush to keep rebels from taking-from place of finding and keeping horses-looks as though it was used for camping ground for rebels-has never aided rebels in any way & had a son (the one releasd) in rebel service was bitterly opposed to his gong in and would if I had been well enough (was sick) made him stay at home have enrolled loyal & have ever been loyal-His neighbors give a good account of him----Believe him to be innocent of the charges.

John Barley Age 19-resident Warren County-farmer boy-arrested a week ago in Calloway County-belonged to Purcell's gang-joined about 2 months-persuaded to go in by Murphy, Baily, Harvey & Wade Thurman-did not intend going in but was persuaded by them-disuaded me from joining Enrolled Militia-took oath in Spring in Warren Co.-intended leaving Purcell's co. & surrendered himself-says that Dr. John Points of Boone came into camp while near his house and staid all forenoon-they got basket provisions from his house-Polly Robinson also give basket provisions to us-
W. J. Hays Age 17-resides in Monroe Co.-arrested Oct. 21, belonged to Purcell's gang-joined 3 or 4 months ago-was in camp 2 weeks-went home & been scouting about lines-he is charged with pressing horses-a horse-denies it-Jno. Barley says he saw him on a stallion in the skirmish when he Barley was taken prisoner -Barley says that Hays father who is also in prison here was a member or regulary with Purcell's band for the past month-that he was often in the camp the month before.
B. F. Harrison Age 41 years-resident of Calloway-farmer-arrested 12th Oct.-arrested in road near his father's house-was asked by officer if he had taken oath-enrolled-replied no and was arrested-reasons for not enrolling (at least the only reason he offered was ) that he was busy & neglected it-never have belonged to rebel service-nor given aid or information-sympathise with the South-above on his statements---no evidence against-only his statements.
John Patton Age 31-resides in Calloway-farmer-arrested under suspicious circumstances 5 miles S. Concord-had 8 chickens in basket, butter and lard in pan-taken them to his brother in law grocer for sale-belonged to rebel company a year ago-took oath in July last & have not violated it at all-the officer arresting him says he looked scared when he first saw him-had 5 or 6 pounds of bacon in saddle bags-4 or 5 pounds butter & lard all together-also a few chickens-thot it better to take him---
J. W. Thompson Says he is unable to pay the 50$ fine against him-he is being better Secesh--

I reported by yesterday's mail J. M. Cox, T. J. Davis, John Drake and Thos. Rouse as belonging to Purcell's Band - I should have said to Capt. Charley Powell's Rebel Co.

Does this letter maybe give a bit more clarification as to what happened? Everyone on that list from A.J. Crigler to G.W. Turner were Porter's men. I found them on the military cards at Fold3. Might they have surrendered on their own?
