A couple of sources indicate Miller was always a Republican. The Topeka Advocate in a short death notice of April 21, 1897, said of Miller's newspaper career that he had been "a Republican wheel-horse during all these years."

On page 50 of the Transactions of the Kansas State Historical Society for 1905-1906 (Volume 9), in a footnote, they say Miller was a "free-state man and afterwards a staunch Republican."

I couldn't find a decent obituary anywhere.

Jennison was called back into service by Gov. Carney of Kansas after the Lawrence Massacre in August 1863 to recruit the 15th and then 16th cavalry regiments, which were to form a brigade under his command (I don't think he ever got a brigadiership). Would that have negated any previous dishonorable discharge? Or was the dishonorable discharge later?

Jennison had a recruiting office for the Kansas 15th Cavalry in Elwood, Kansas, across the river from St. Joseph, which siphoned off potential recruits for the 12th Missouri Cavalry. At one point, a group of recruits for the 12th Missouri in St. Joseph broke ranks, shouted "Hurrah for Jennison and Lane" and went off to join Jennison's forces.
