Putnam County Militia

My G-G-grandfather William Dixon was a member of the 45th Enrolled Missouri Militia under Col. W.A. Shelton, company E under Capt. Ledford.

My genealogy records show that his unit was sent to Macon Oct. 1864. Since Macon was a Union headquarter for that area because of the Hannibal/St.
Joseph railroad, when Gen. Price invaded MO trying to regain control of the Missouri River in late 1864, there was some concern he would send a force north from Columbia to attack Macon. After the threat of Price moved on further west toward the K.C. area, my G-G-grandfather's unit was sent to Glasgow (Howard County). When Price showed no interest in Glasgow, the unit was sent to Brunswick & Keytesville (Chariton County). Back again to Glasgow to "protect the voting precincts" for the 1864 Presidential elections. After Nov. 8th 1864, the Putnam County Militia was relieved from duty and returned to civilian life.

It was suggested to me as a child -- that still today there perhaps is some hard feelings by Chariton County residents toward the Putnam County Militia. Obviously, there would have been a lot of southern sympathy in the Keytesville area of Price's home.
William did not mention any details of activity, just dates & places.
I'm curious -- now that I'm in my '60's if it's true -- and if so, why.
