If you visit the site, you will see the advantages, flat high ground, near water, etc. The camp was only temporary as it was part of Davidson's campaign that eventually went into AR and back during the winter of 62-63. The campaign was not only unsuccessful, but pretty much unpopular with the soldiers involved, not to mention the civilian population of the area.
