Yes, Missouri is complicated,

As an interesting aside I've found an expected large amount of Missouri Confederate fatalities recorded in the string of confederate hospitals located on the M&O railroad in Mississippi, (Marion, Lauderdale Springs, Okolona, Quitman/Texas Hospital, to name but a few) that can be attributed to Shiloh, Corinth, Iuka, and the Vicksburg Campaign. I've found that frequently the Missouri soldier's record just ends with a note like sick, deserted, missing, wounded, only to then find in the MS hospital records an admission record and disposition often with the cemetery listed. (It's easier to work backwards from the cemetery/hospital record, in essence asking where did this person come from instead of asking where did he go?) It appears that post war little effort was made to correlate the disparate records and files and only now with the magic of the internet and computers are we able to "close the loop". With all this said, the records do also indicate a number of Missouri Union soldiers who received care in the facilities as well. I'm sure that there exists the case of friends growing up together in Missouri, fighting each other, and then dying together in MS if someone was to look hard enough.

If anyone has the opportunity, taking a few moments to visit the Confederate Cemetery at Lauderdale Springs, MS is worth the stop. As I understand it the local SCV chapter now has ownership of the property but it is a pretty hilltop cemetery where a few moments of reflection of those who gave their life during this great struggle of ours is worthwhile.
