I keep falling back to the document that states Robert Paxton was sent to Alton, Ill. I find it hard to believe that they would have this documented after he'd escaped. This is my timeline.

Aug 18- Dec 31 1862 Present
11 Jan 1863 Left to wait with wounded at Hartville.
3 Aug 1863 Robert Paxton is captured in Henry Co., MO.
1 Sep 1863 Prisoner received at Gratiot Prison.
23 Sep 1863 (just found) Letter from Paxton to Col. Brandhead? Perhaps head of Gratiot?asking for meeting.
9 Oct 1863 Prisoner escapes from window onto pile of sand.
Jan-Feb 1864 Absent with leave.
1 Sep 1864 Prisoner sent to Alton, Ill. Captured 3 Aug, 1863.

I'm afraid for some reason, I cannot get my mind wrapped around this. Would one be listed as a set with leave, if they were a POW? I'm going to send off for his complete record and pension file. Then I will know more, I hope. If you're at all interested, I'll mail you a copy. I'd be glad for any help you can give me. I find myself quite obsessed with this enigma! I submitted a correction to my publisher substituting "Charles V. Snelling"Â
for "Benjamin L. Snelling" in two places on the first full paragraph on pageÂ
172 of "Guerrilla Warfare in Civil War Missouri, Volume II, 1863." I alsoÂ
asked the publisher to replace the 1860 Census reference in Chapter 12 endnoteÂ
#65 on page 344 with the R. B. Coleman "Brave Charles Snelling and His Fate,"Â
"Confederate Veteran" reference.Â
