I expect you have this info but from "Portrait and Biographical Record of Lafayette and Saline Counties, Missouri: Containing Biographical Sketches of Prominent and Representative Citizens, Together with Biographies and Portraits of All the Presidents of the United States, Chapman, 1893"

Re: Edward Smarr

"In the fall of 1862, our subject enlisted in Cockerill's Battalion, and was sent to Arkansas, where he was connected with Hineman's (sic) Confederate army, being detailed on courier duty. Subsequently becoming a member of Shelby's Division, he took part in the battles of Perry Grove (sic, I suspect this is Prairie Grove 12-71862), and other engagements of minor importance.

After the close of the war, our subject returned to La Fayette County, and resumed his occupation of farming on the homestead where he has since remained."

So he may have been on a recruiting trip north when captured. The note about courier duty is interesting as well. Clearly he and Nelson Smarr were imprisoned at the same time and likely taken together.
