Cindy, John R., and Scott,

Here is a list of names of southerners Darrell Maples passed along to this forum on 18 August 2013 taken from the Union Provost Marshal records. These names may be:

1. men whose names appeared on personal letters that Confederate recruiter "General" Crabtree brought back with him in September 1862 from Confederate garrisons further south to distribute to their families in Miller, Cole, and Chariton Counties; or

2. southern sympathizers in that area who may have been recruits Crabtree gathered for the Confederate regular forces further south; or

3. southern sympathizers of that area who were listed by Kennard Hagen and James Fowler as having been some of those southerners who took Hagen and Fowler as prisoners for a while at some time in 1861 or 1862;

4. a combination of the above.

The names include: [unknown] Crabtree, Henry Clark, W. F. Clark, James F. Clark, John Clark, Benjamin Clark, George Connard, William Farmer, James Ridges, James Revis, George Purvis, William Russell, Benjamin Bell.

Darrell Maples also asserted that some of those named men were also members of the Cole and Miller County area southern Missouri State Guard (MSG) unit that Crabtree worked for, and those men included George W. Pervis or Purvis, James Revis, and William B. Russell.

We will need some help looking up these names in the 1860 census to see if they lived in either Miller, Cole, or Chariton County, and help researching Missouri Civil War records kept by the Missouri Secretary of State's Office to see what those records indicate was those men's Civil War records, if they have any listed. Your help will be appreciate, as some of the information you detect may help settle very old mysteries about the Civil War in this area.

Until later, Bruce Nichols
