Re: John B Matlock

Jonathan/John B Matlock b. 1839/41 (KY) d. 17 Mar 1925 (AR) son of George C and Sarah Matlock, 1860 census in Johnson Co. Married 2nd time to Mrs Jennie S Davis 1906, Polk Co Missouri. He filed for a confederate pension from Arkansas in 1923 for service in Missouri Cav. Wife filed for widow benefit in 1925. Nancy A Huff was his first wife. He spent a fair amount of time in Barton and Polk Counties after the war. His pension is listed in Arkansas State archives application #26356 and unit served appears as 10th Missouri Cavalry (Confederate).

He appears to have been enlisted in Confederate service by Cockrell in Springfield Jan 4 1862 for 1 year assigned to Sgt Co A, Erwin's 3rd Battalion, listed as deserted May 8, 1862, near Corinth Native of Kentucky, Resident of Holden, Johnson County Missouri, age 21, occupation farmer.

He appears in an enlistment dated Jan 26, 1862, "near Springfield" for Co H 1st Missouri Infantry enlisted by Cockrell resident of Johnson Co, MO.

He is then found enlisting in 10th Missouri Cav Aug 10 1862 as Pvt in Co G, again by Cockeral (sic) and on muster roll for that unit Aug 1863 to Feb 1864.

This pattern fits with him being more attached to Cockrell than the CSA with his desertion and return to Missouri from Corinth just one of hundreds that did the same.

http://rlshhm.wixsite.com/josephines/c-s-a lists him as a resident of NW Arkansas that served with Quantrill colleagues.
