Thanks George. John J. is a different soldier. In further research I've discovered that all three of these brothers survived the war. It appears that they were recruited by Crabtree, a Confederate recruiter sent to this area from Arkansas, and enlisted at Thomasville in August 1862. Do you know if this would match the history of Pindall's Sharpshooters? Here's what's engraved on James M. Downing's headstone: Pvt. Co. A, 9th MO SS-CSA.
