That's our guy. This is critical stuff. Thanks to your input, I am finally getting a pretty good handle on the illusive Captain Tom W. Todd.
So we know that his uncle Thomas D. Todd and cousin Joseph D. Todd served in his command (Company E, Perkin's Battalion). Looking at a roster of the battalion and cross referencing with the census information you have provided, and we can place multiple brothers of Capt. Tom Todd into the same unit.
I have also found a research piece put together by a Todd descendant who states his grandfather was Thomas D. Todd, and that his grandfather, Capt. William Chenault Todd (W.C. Todd) participated at Centralia. With genealogy being a murky business, this descendant stated he didn't think W.C. Todd was related to Tom W. Todd.
However, with our research of the past few days, it would appear they are related, and that W.C. may be the brother of Joseph D. Todd whose obituary said joined his cousin Tom W. Todd's company. Or W.C. Todd could actually be a brother of Tom W. Todd--the census shows he had a brother named Chenault Todd.
Anyway--one more big favor to ask here--I don't have access to the censuses--could you see what you can come up with for Thomas D. Todd and William Chenault Todd for the era? Probably Little Dixie area/north central Missouri area--Boone, Howard....
And if anybody knows anything in general about this W.C. Todd, please feel free to jump in
Thanks again John, you have provided the key we have all been looking for.
