Purcell was indeed active in 1861 -- he raised a group of men and integrated them into the command of Jefferson F. Jones in Calloway County. It was Jones' and Purcell's men who were involved in the so-called Kingdom of Callaway escapade. After they were disbursed by John B. Henderson in the fall of '61, Purcell afterwards began recruiting the Purcell Scouts/Purcell Sharpshooters/Company L, 1 NE Mo Cav
