The Missouri in the Civil War Message Board

Lindsay Murdoch Narrative

Thanks for your support regarding the book. Hold on to it--the hardback copies are now out of print. Just soft copies are now readily available. They're still selling too.

Regarding Lindsay Murdoch...we got lucky. I found the document. Truthfully, I wasn't expecting to. I haven't looked at it since July 2000, so I wasn't sure whether I had it or not. I'm not even sure how I got it. I was sweeping up Missouri Civil War primary source documents by the thousands of pages at the time. Jim McGhee maybe provided it to me, given the article I used it for.

Now what I have is a 45-page typescript whose cover sheet says "Reproduction sponsored by the Bollinger County Historical Society Marble Hill Missouri." At the top of that typed cover is a handwritten note saying "Echo" Bollinger Co. Historical Society Vol. II Oct. 1979. Inside are transcriptions of military communications involving Murdoch, including with Ulysses Grant, as well as biographical and other information. The introductory note to the document states, in part, "Since the original of Murdoch's narratives is no longer available this copy was made from a very badly deteriorated reproduction. The sub-headings have been added for easier reading. This copy was made available in 1979 by the Bollinger County Historical Society, Inc., a not-for-profit corporation, for all who are interested in Civil War History, especially as it pertains to Bollinger County and the surrounding counties in Missouri."

So I think it will be a key addition to your collection. Just tell me how to get it to you.
