Murdoch/Pape -- Hell Hounds/Four-Mile Deadshots
In Response To: Re: Lindsay Murdoch Narrative ()

Fred, I'll get it sent out to you Monday. Don't worry about cost--I'm pretty sure Jim McGhee gave it to me so I'll pay it forward. And maybe you can do the same for the historical repositories in your area. Wouldn't hurt to get it to more than just one since this is so hard to come by. And John, while I'm at it, I'll get a copy to you too.

Regarding Pape, the first hard-print article I ever had published to a broad audience was on the Burning of Doniphan in North & South magazine almost 20 years. It provides overviews of Pape, James Steakley, and William Neven, all veterans of Company K, 3rd MSM/Company A, 12th MSM/Fremont Rangers. While I'm at it, I'll throw a copy this article in your packets. The footnotes to the article also lay out a trail of source materials for you which reach back to the Fremont Rangers.

Small Unit Trivia -- During the war Murdoch's Fremont Rangers were also nicknamed Hell Hounds, while the successor A/12MSM K/3MSM was nicknamed the Four Mile Deadshots (so-named for a ridiculously long shot one of its troopers successfully once made).
