Re: First Missouri Secession Vote

John, I'm looking at the vote on page 46 of the Journal where Bast was the only nay vote, 89 ayes, 6 absent, and 3 sick. This was the vote on the first resolution that Prof. Parrish was referring to--I believe--but of course I could be misunderstanding it. In any event, there's a contemporary source that singled out Bast for his nay vote. There is also a near contemporary source that also does so.

The Missouri Republican of March 20, 1861, (the day after the vote) says "The first resolution reported by the Committee on Federal Relations, declaring that no adequate cause at present exists to induce Missouri to dissolve her connection with the General Government, was adopted unanimously, with the exception of one vote (Mr. Bast)." The 1885 History of St. Charles, Montgomery, and Warren Counties also highlighted Bast's lone vote in this case and said he was suspected by unconditional Unionists of being a secessionist but he always denied it and never did "secede" from the State Convention or bear arms against the Union.

I think Bast is the name Kirby was looking for but since he never followed through on "seceding" maybe it's wrong to concentrate on him. Whereas several of those who voted aye on March 19 may have become secessionists after the Camp Jackson incident. Is there a quick way to find out which of them did?
