Re: Fulton Raid, 1862 - Clement Fowler?

Your Typhoid Fowler is the right one.

Mustered JC McDonalds Company 1st NE Cav (Company O) July 31 1862 by Porter in Marion County. The feds in St.Louis report him as a Private. No age or rank on the 2 Confederate records.

There is a Benedict J Fowler that enlisted same time same place same company. He was captured Hannibal MO Oct 27, 1863, also listed as private. He and his brother Francis Fowler both surrendered, both confined for the war. Both reported being in a skirmish in Ralls County. Both went home to Monroe County then tried to rejoin Porter to "cross the river" and go south.

"Benedict Fowler and his brothers Clement and Francis. All three were privates in Capt. McDonald's Co O, 1st N. E. Cavalry and all three ended up in Gratioit Street Prison. Clement died 15 Jan 1863 of typhoid fever and the other two were sentenced to hard labor at Alton for violating the oath of allegience they had taken to the U. S. in the spring of 1862
Prison records show Benedict J. Fowler surrendered/was captured 27-28 Oct 1862 at Hannibal, Marion Co, and received at Gratiot Street Prison 2 Nov 1862, then dismissed to Alton 6 Dec 1863 and returned to Gratiot 11 Mar 1863. He was tried and convicted of violating his oath of allegiance to the United States and sentenced to hard labor at Alton 6 Jun 1863.

In his statement to prison officials 14 Mar 1863 B. J. Fowler said he took the oath of allegiance to the U. S. about 31 Apr 1862 before Col. Strawn of Palmyra, but was sworn in to Crigler's Co by Col. Porter 31 Jul 1862 in Monroe Co. He remained with Porter 4 or 5 days in Monroe and Lewis County, then went home for about 4 weeks after he left Porter and remained there most of the time. He started once to cross the Missouri River with McDonald's Co. and was out about a week, but turned back when he saw no chance of getting south. He said he was married and had two children; had two brothers in southern service; one died in Gratiot prison hospital (Clement Fowler) and the other (Francis Fowler) was then a prisoner. He said he was a southern sympathizer and did not want to see the southern people put down and the authority of the U. G. Government over them restored but would take the oath, give bond and enroll in the militia. In spite of letters from influential Monroe County men (see file) saying that B. J. Fowler and his brother Francis had been solid citizens of the Florida community before Porter's Raid and would cause no trouble if released, he was sentenced to hard labor at Alton 6 Jun 1863."
