A language expert could pick apart the first reference regarding county judge and analyze what time frame he was speaking of. The second reference in the passage was more suggestive, at least to me, that the victim was judge at the time of the event. Maupin’s death during his term of office in the close aftermath of the massacre would be quite a coincidence if it was unrelated. As for Maupin lingering that long, the confederate whose accidental shooting got the ball rolling lived until the end of November—and he had caught a full load of buckshot in his side from a few feet away.
