Family stuff:
Father was Reuben Hatton, Revolutionary Soldier in Greene's company, settled in South Carolina married, moved to Kentucky then Boone County. Stewart was born 1811 in Kentucky near Foxtown in Madison County. Married Alitha Barnes 10 Apr 1835 in Boone County. Served two stints as Major Bonne County Militia during the Mormon Wars, Appointed Brigadier Gen. Boone County State Militia 1854(?) two differing dates 1850 the earlier. Did not join MSG, may have considered his prior state militia appointment valid to that organization.

I find no evidence that he recruited outside of Boone and Callaway counties. He may have had some pull in Howard county as his residence was close to the county line.

As previously mentioned arrested thrice, did take oath in 1861. Union PM files have 40 pages or so mostly affidavits collected unsuccessfully trying to put him in arms against the government. Most collected around a visit to Pointdexter's camp at Bethlehem Meeting House or church.

He bought the Dixon Mill on Callahan creek which was successful and the bought out a steam mill opened about a1/2 mile from Dixon/Hatton mill. This mill was built by Stapleton. Given his business acumen and political savvy, I suspect the mills continued to operate during the war supplying both sides.

Hatton served a term as State Rep from Boone county before the war. He was flamboyant as illustrated in his appearance at militia meetings and the recorded July 4, 1865 celebration.

I must also point out his nephew ( son of brother Rev. Robert Clopton Hatton) was CSA General Robert Hatton from Lebanon TN. A statue of Hatton is in the town square there. He apparently entered the Civil War blind in one eye, as numerous newspaper reports him as "One-eyed General".
