The Missouri in the Civil War Message Board

Coin or Currency Question

Someone donated an original civil war letter from a soldier to his girlfriend written in October 1863 to the Lutheran Heritage Center & Museum in Altenburg.
A friend of the museum in Munich translated the letter for us and everything is very understandable except what he was going to give as a gift to help replace his lost horse.

The soldier commented that his friend's horse had died and that "our company will pretty much replace the horse for him".
"I will give him 2 rf and if that is not enough, I will throw in another rf."

Do any of you know what form of payment a "rf" was in civil war days?

Thanks, Fred Eggers
