Purcell's Whereabouts in 1850 & 1860

Looking to locate Confederate Captain Young Alexander Purcell's whereabout in the 1850 and 1860 censuses. He was residing in Littleby, Audrain County in 1862, but the History of Boone County places him on a list of 1850 Boone County residents who went to the California goldfields that year.

So...he may be in the Boone County 1850 census, or somewhere in the 1850 census in California gold country, or maybe he appears in both censuses, which sometimes happened to mobile individuals in a census year.

As for 1860, he could be in Boone County, or probably more likely, in Audrain County.

Help would be very much appreciated.
