Re: Where the Scalping Took Place

Fred; I don't disagree per se, given the info the MSM was moving from Fayette to Rocheport the question was how and where. Modern rt 240 is the old Fayette to Rocheport road known to be in existence in 1864. Your pick is Modern rt DD south out of Fayette to New Franklin then along the river to Rocheport. Both are possible, I started in Moniteau township simply because I thought the more direct route was down 240 but nothing makes that 100% from what we know. All these locations we are talking about are within about 7 miles of each other and I have yet to locate a Turner- Long property that wasn't separated by some distance. I also have been looking at families that may have reason to shelter southern guerrillas even though this was friendly countryside and Bill Anderson's backyard.

So back to your atlas, (which is 15 years older than any I had looked at, good find :>), If you look at page 16 you will find White's Store on the Fayette-Rochefort road middle of section 21. White's is described as 8 miles out of Fayette and 5 miles from Rocheport. Moving south from Fayette there is a road to the west that breaks along the section lines about 2 road miles mile north of White's.

This road is likely modern Rt P. Moving west a bit more than 2 miles you find the E Turner farm in section 18 right on the township line. This farm is a contiguous with the Ed Turner farm section 24 on your page 21. Northwest of this Turner property is Hocker holdings (W H Long's mother was a Hocker, thus his middle name) and another Turner property before reaching the WH Long property in section 10. A distance of about 2-3 miles. So all these fit the time distance equation for the incident.

So at a horse walk route P is a couple hours out of Fayette, another 45 to 60 minutes west on P. Bingo Turner farm, shoot out and race to escape, caught at WH Long farm, 30 to 60 minutes later. All in a days work and ride for a cavalry unit.

Now to prove what we think likely! But kudos to you to find a plat listing for WH Long! I know Reuben had land in the neighborhood but had not found specifics for William Hocker Long. - jjr
